TIADA rotan, kelapa sawitpun jadi. Sayur umbut kelapa sawit adalah salah satu kuliner unik di sini. Sudah tentu ia tak akan dijumpai di Pulau Jawa dan sekitarnya. Meskipun rasa kuahnya tak jauh beda dengan sayur lodeh.

Orang bijak mengatakan bahwa kuliner suatu komunitas masyarakat sungguh mencirikan kebudayaan. Saya bersetuju dengan pendapat tersebut. Dan saya makin sependapat takkala berada di sini. Menemukan satu jenis kuliner baru yang muncul karena tumbuh dan berkembangnya perkebunan skala besar. Ia adalah sayur umbut kelapa sawit.

Konon, kuliner yang sangat familiar bagi suku bangsa minoritas Dayak Ngaju, dikembangkan dari jenis serupa berbahan dasar rotan muda. Dalam bahasa ilmiah, rotan ini disebut Calamus rotang. Sebagai suku bangsa yang hidup dari pemanfaatan hasil hutan, rotan adalah produk utama komoditi di pasar local. Tentulah, hal demikian mensyaratkan habitat hutan dan ekosistemnya masih utuh sebagai rumah hidup rotan.

Kini hutan telah banyak tiada. Digantikan oleh kelapa sawit.
